Corset Dresses: How to Choose, Fit and Style One
Share
A good corset dress does something no other dress can: it builds the shape for you. The bodice holds, the waist is defined, and you stop adjusting your neckline every five minutes. Here is what to look for before you buy one.
What makes a corset dress
- Boning - flexible channels sewn into the bodice that keep it smooth and upright.
- Cups - underwired or moulded cups mean you usually do not need a bra.
- Lace-up or zip back - a lace-up back gives you a few centimetres of adjustment; a zip gives a clean line.
How to choose your size
Corset bodices have very little stretch, so measure your bust and waist before ordering and compare them with the size guide. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one - a lace-up back can always be tightened, but a too-small bodice cannot be let out.
What to wear underneath
Most corset dresses are cupped and lined, so nothing is needed on top. For strapless styles a stick-on bra works best. Choose seamless underwear in a tone close to your skin under satin and light colours.
How to style it
- Wedding or gala: floor-length satin, hair up, delicate drop earrings.
- Prom: a corset bodice with a tulle or flared skirt and block heels you can dance in. See our prom dresses.
- Summer party: a cotton corset midi with flat sandals and a woven bag.
- Date night: a corset dress with a tailored blazer over the shoulders.
How to care for boned dresses
Dry clean only, store on a hanger or flat, and never fold across the boning. Steam the skirt rather than ironing it.
